Longer shadows

31st August 2017, Dunstanburgh, 7:30

Another sure sign of autumn are the longer shadows from the lower sun.
At this time of year the chilly morning temperatures are quickly replaced by summer sunshine.

Now, there's something you don't see every day.  (the 2nd picture reveals more)

Sunbow

30th August 2017, Dunstanburgh, 7:30

A beautiful ring of rainbow colours around the sun this morning.  I looked it up...

"Also known as a 22 degree halo or a sun halo, the ring is caused by sunlight passing through ice crystals in cirrus clouds within the Earth’s atmosphere"

first chill

29th August 2017, Embleton Bay, 7:30am

This morning I felt the first chill of autumn as soon as I opened the door.  Down at the beach and the blue morning skies of summer are replaced by a beautiful light.  Roll on autumn.

arty chatter

27th August 2017, Dunstanburgh, 7:30am

Up by the castle. It was nice and quiet here but the car park was pretty full already at 7:30am. Think it'll be a busy bank holiday.

27th August 2017, Howick, 4pm

We sat and watched the sea and enjoyed a lovely inspiring arty chat in the sun while the Sunday dinner was cooking at home #paradise.

28th August 2017, Newton Point, 5pm

A conference of limpets.

Saturday 26 August 2017

an early night

26th August 2017, Beadnell Bay, 6am

Rejuvenated by an early night I was up for sunrise.

Friday 25 August 2017

Sun/rain

25th August 2017, Embleton Bay, 7am

We started in rain by the Skaith but soon the sun came out.

Yesterday the Skaith was dammed with sand and was filling up.  This morning there's a sinuous outflow and the level has dropped.

25th August 2017, Embleton Bay, 9am

Sam's 1:1 PhotoWalk just a couple of hours later and very different light.

Wednesday 23 August 2017

changing

23rd August 2017, Newton Point, 5pm

The most interesting light for a photographer is changing light. Night to day at sunrise, day to night at sunset, bright to stormy, or misty to bright. It has been misty for two days and finally the mist broke up and headed off to sea with bright sun close on its heels.

On our way home...

fretty

22nd August 2017, Embleton Bay, 7am

Round here we get sea fret (fog) after a couple of warm days. This is pretty much the first time we've had a couple of warm days in a row...

The local wildlife don't mind - this is a red breasted merganser.  A duck of salt and fresh water.

22nd August, at home, evening.

A portrait of a tired dog resting.

up close

20th August 2017, Newton Point, 7:30am

Here are some things close up from this morning's walk through a big landscape.  These lichen patterns reminded me of footprints.

...and another one in what seems to have become a series of beach patterns (Day 3!)

Saturday 19 August 2017

photobombed

19th August 2017, Embleton Bay, 8am

Sometimes I like to go up high first to see where the beach is quietest so we can descend for a run about without bothering anyone.  Today there was quite a lot of choice

Down on the beach in among the fresh water that flows endlessly across the sand.

I had lined up a nice photo (similar to one I took recently) until I was photobombed by my hairy companion...

along and above

17th August 2017, Embleton Bay, 7:30am

A beautiful morning along the beach and above the beach

17th August 2017, Chatton Park, 10am

A walk in good company up to the cup and ring marks of Chatton Park Hill.

Wednesday 16 August 2017

Long shadows

16th August 2017, Dunstanburgh, 7:30am

In the middle of summer the sun is already high in the sky by the time of my normal dog-walk.  Soon we'll get to the sunrise dogwalk of autumn and winter. My favourite time of year.  Meanwhile, as the days shorten the shadows lengthen.

Tuesday 15 August 2017

bejewelled

15th August 2017, Embleton Bay, 7:30am

Some days I enjoy ignoring the obvious draw of Dunstanburgh Castle and point my camera elsewhere. Today was all about the waves and the sunlight shining through the rollers.

Meanwhile up in the dunes the morning sun caught the harebells bejewelled by the overnight rain.

Not much running around from the hound this morning. She's getting older (aren't we all) and saves her energy for special pals...

15th August 2017, Howick, 11am

I was fortunate to miss this heavy shower on my run.  Only a few cooling raindrops came my way
